Fukuma Era 2001-2004

Only Understanding What's Happening 20% of the Time

Above is the original Menu from the Fukuma-Era version of Hair Flap. In it, you’ll find older versions of the About and Hair Flap!? pages as well as sections that no longer exist on their own, such as Engrish and Misc.

Fukuma Hair Flap

From July 2001 to August 2004 I lived in Fukuoka, Japan as a participant of the JET Programme. Shortly after I arrived I realized that each day spawned so many interesting (and sometimes deliciously banal) stories about life in Japan that I just had to share them with everyone I knew.

At a time when LiveJournal was still the defacto way to share thoughts online, I instead decided to dip my toes into the relatively young publishing format of the weblog, or ‘blog’.

Presence

Presence

Can't explain it, but lately light has been 'whispering' to me a lot. Fortunately my camera is usually not too far away when it does.

Puffer Apocolypse

Puffer Apocolypse

I don't know how addicted you are to Weather.com reports, but there's been some hellacious winds hitting my neck of the woods lately, which always makes for all kinds of crap getting washed up on the beach and just generally making it look like a landfill. The other...

Passing the Buck, Vol. 2

Just a little entertainment made by Someone Not Me for Friday evening. I've posting things here before and touted them with the same title, but I honestly think this is the funniest thing I've ever seen on the internet. Behold. I'm still wiping tears off my face and...

Vindication at Last

Vindication at Last

Yeah, yesterday was the site fulfilling it's purpose of keeping friend's up to date on things that others might not know about. Sorry if you were left confused. Now on to the fun stuff! I recently and randomly got an email from an employee of one of the bigger Mac...

History Repeating

I can't believe I'm getting screwed over again by the same goddamn shit! Is there anyone out there that isn't absolutely terrified of living!?!? P.S. - Happy fucking Valentine's Day

Sweep the knee!!

Sweep the knee!!

I, for one, am sure glad that the cover for the Karate Kid DVD box set here in Japan made sure to prominently feature Ralph Macchio getting his sorry ass beat by the Evil Karate gang. Nothing like capturing the essense of your story's hero for the sake of selling...

Fukuma is a Winter Wonderland

Fukuma is a Winter Wonderland

Holy smokes, has it been cold lately! Like really cold. Like due the wonderful insulation in this flat, I've had to have both my electric air conditioner/heater and kerosene stove going full blast to stay moderately warm. And in a Kyushyu First for me, we got snow!!...

But that’s not what I meant…

So, yes, I'm finally back. I hope to back for good now too. I'm not entirely sure why I took such an unusually long break from the site this time; I suspect it was a few factors. A big part of it was that I was simply running low on creative juices and really didn't...

Checking in

My triumphant return is slated for next week. I have a ton of good stuff that's been piling up so it's time I got off my lazy arse and got back to it. I actually intended to get to it tonight, but I'm tired as hell and this Jedi Academy icon in my dock is openly...

Anonymity, No More

Anonymity, No More

A very Happy New Year to all y'all!! Or as they say here on these here islands, akemashite omedeto gozaimasu!! Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that I'm indeed still alive and well, despite my lack of recent postings. Having a girl to be crazy over keeps me...

Wishing I Were a Ninja Since 1991

So I was able to get my arse to the theater to see Last Samurai the other day and since I know that the first time any of you see anything to do with Japan, your first thought is invariably, "Gee, what would Scott's fascinating and invaluable insight on this be, I...
